Educational Support Careers Program FAQ

What is the Educational Support Careers program, and who is it for?

The Educational Support Careers program is a one year, two course program that prepares its learners for careers as paraprofessionals. The emphasis is on Pre K through the 8th grade, elementary and middle school.

What kind of jobs can I get after completing this program?

The types of jobs include paraprofessional, classroom aide, campus supervisor.

Do I need a high school diploma or GED to enroll?

A diploma or a GED is required to work in a school setting. There are no requirements, however, to enroll in the program. Jefferson Adult Education offers a high school diploma program, as well as GED at no cost.

What will I learn during the one-year program?

  • Learners will study how children grow and develop, from birth through 12. The emphasis will be on their learning in a school setting.
  • The role of the paraprofessional in an educational institution as classified personnel, including rights and responsibilities.
  • How schools are organized, the roles and functions of staff.

    • Classroom management
    • Instructional support
    • Communication
    • Supervision, including lunch, recess, transportation and transitions between classrooms
    • Documentation and recordkeeping

Is there any hands-on experience or classroom observation included?

Students enrolled in this program will be required to perform 50 hours for the fall semester as part of the Understanding Children and the Learning Environment course.

Students will also be enrolled in an internship for the spring semester as part of the Safety, Procedures and School Readiness course.

Will this program help me meet the qualifications to become a paraprofessional in a public school?

While there are no formal certification requirements to become a paraprofessional, this program gives you a strong foundation through classroom instruction and hands-on experience. You’ll gain the practical skills, confidence, and understanding of school environments that will make you a more effective and prepared candidate than someone with no training or experience.

What is the weekly schedule like, and are evening or online classes available?

The class is conducted once a week, on Fridays, from 9-12. Online classes are available.

Is there a cost to enroll in the program, and are there any financial assistance options?

The year-long course costs $96 total, $49 per course. In addition fingerprints and a background check costs $40-$50. Fingerprints may be obtained at the UPS store.

Do I need to be fluent in English to join the program?

Instruction is in English, so you should have at least an intermediate or advanced level of English comprehension to succeed in the program. Since paraprofessionals work directly with students and staff in educational settings, strong communication skills are important. Volunteering in a school is a great first step, and we encourage learners to build both their English and classroom experience as they prepare for employment.

Can this program help me continue my education or get a teaching credential in the future?

This program provides a strong foundation for anyone interested in working in education, especially as a paraprofessional or classroom aide in the classified (non-certificated) category. While the program does not award transferable credits and cannot be used directly toward a degree or teaching credential, it’s an excellent way to gain experience, build confidence, and explore whether a career in education is the right path for you. Many learners use it as a stepping stone before pursuing further education.
